Day 5 - San Francisco to Vancouver

Long day of travelling today. Up to catch the bus at 3.30am……yes that’s right, 3.30am to catch our flight to Vancouver. We had a stop in Salt Lake City, Utah that provided us with our first look at snow for the trip as the whole city was blanketed in it. It looked incredible! After another short flight we arrived in Vancouver, Canada and immediately set out to explore this cold, cold city. After a stop off at Mountain Equipment Coop for some last minute fleeces and thermals we caught the subway to Vancouver Curling Club for our first taste of real winter sport.
After many slips and falls and tired arms from sweeping so hard we managed to perform some semblance of a reasonable game of curling. The game is similar to lawn bowls except the object of the game is to slide a 20kg rock down a sheet of ice and have it finish as close to the centre of a target area as possible. Sweepers use modified brooms to sweep the ice to help it slide faster and further. Every night in our hotel rooms here, we can watch the “Roar of the Rings”, the Canadian Curling Championships, awesome.
From here we caught the subway back to “Gastown”, the oldest part of Vancouver and then walked past the famous steam clock and on to the Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner. An endless list of pasta dishes awaited us and we indulged heartily. Back to the hotel and bed in preparation for our first full day in Vancouver tomorrow.
